Burnet girls basketball rebounds with victory against Lago Vista

The Burnet High School girls basketball team crushed Lago Vista 53-34 Jan. 20 to end the first round of District 24-4A play.
“I thought we did a really good job of executing the offense,” head coach Rick Gates said. “They have a really good player (senior guard Sophia Read), and we did a really good job of limiting her. She still had 13 points, but we held them to 34 points.”
Burnet led 12-9 after the first quarter and exploded for 20 points in the next stanza. Meanwhile, the Lady Dawgs limited the Lady Vikings to six points for a 32-15 advantage at the half. Lago Vista scored one field goal and made four free throws for its points.
“We were able to push the pace and get some transition baskets,” Gates said.
The Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Vikings 21-19 in the second half.
“They cut it to 15 at one point,” Gates said. “(The score) made it possible for me to play a lot of kids. We were able to rotate freely and (reserves) were able to get out there and get significant minutes as well.”
One highlight is that all but one Lady Dawg scored led by junior center Zaria Solis, who dropped in 17 points, scoring 13 in the first half. Senior guard Grace Gates and sophomore Cydney Robison each added 9 points.
“Zaria did a great job,” the coach said. “We got the ball to her, and she did a great job of finishing.”
The Lady Dawgs (16-7, 2-2) are fourth in the district standings behind Marble Falls (16-12, 3-1), Lampasas (23-9, 3-1) and Jarrell (19-12, 2-2). Lago Vista (9-18, 0-4) is fifth.
Burnet, which hosts its next four contests, welcomes Marble Falls Tuesday, Jan. 24, to The Doghouse. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6:15 p.m., and freshmen at 8 p.m.
